HowTo: Using external GPS in NaviComputer

Some Pocket PC OEMs hid the GPS control panel. However, it can be unhidden by going into the registry and deleting any "Redirect" or "Hide" keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings.

Start/Settings/Connnections/Bluetooth
Check the "Turn on Bluetooth" checkbox.
Press the Device tab.
Press "Add new device..."
select your GPS device and press Next.
Check the "Serial Port" checkbox and press Finish.
Press the COM Ports tab.
Press "New outgoing port..."
Select your device and press Next.
You will see a COM port that has been chosen for your GPS. For example, COM0.
Press Finish.
Now your GPS is set up on COM0. If you do not want to use the Intermediate Driver to share the GPS port, just start your GPS app and configure it to use COM0. If you do want to use the Intermediate Driver:

Start/Settings/System/GPS. (If you do not see GPS listed, see the registry hack above.)
Set the "GPS Program Port" to any unused COM port, for example, COM9.
Press the Hardware tab.
Set the Hardware Port to COM0.
Set the baud rate to the baud rate of your Bluetooth GPS (usually 4800, or 9600).
Press OK.
Start your GPS app and configure it to use COM9.

I used COM 0 in Bluetooth Device and COM 9 in External GPS settings.

    Did not have: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings

What I did have, and never *SAW* before was a GPS "program" under Programs. Which once set allowed Navi to "see" the External GPS Reciever.

    A real Simpsons DOH! 🙂

I have two ther applications (NoniGPSPlot and OZiExplorerCE) that both can see the bluetooth GPS quite happily. I can't get NAviComputer to use the GPS. I am loathed to change the settings as I know that they work. Any suggestions please.
    Cheers,

  3. Fred the Thickie Says:

    Sussed it,
Changed setting from COM9 to COM6 and the GPS worked a treat.

This is looking a great piece of software now, will be giving it a trial run of a couple of hundred miles in the near future.

  4. Jole Says:

A very cool software. One quick question, I have internal gps on com4 and external (BT) on com6. NaviComp. always use internal. How do I change it to use external? Thanks

  5. Thomas Says:

    @Jole
I have the same issue on my HTC Touch Diamond (WM 6.1), but the steps mentioned above might do the trick. Additional information can be found here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb158600.aspx

I will test on my own and will let you know if it works.

Anyway: great piece of software, surely the best one available for outdoor navigation!

I will try that one later.

With the built-in possibilities, it is not possible to use an external GPS with Navicomputer on an HTC Touch Diamond (WM 6.1).
The reason for this is that Navicomputer obviously needs the "Manage GPS automatically" setting of the "External GPS" settings. Otherwise, it is not possible to enable GPS fixing (click on button in Navicomputer does not work, so you simply cannot enable GPS). But it is necessary to disable this option for using an external GPS device; otherwise, the Diamond uses automatically the internal GPS, no matter what you try to configure.
But switching the mentioned option "Manage GPS automatically" off also means that the program needs to provide an option for manually selecting the port that is configured for the external GPS device via "Bluetooth" settings in Windows Mobile - which is something Navicomputer does not provide at the moment.

So fingers crossed that GPSModDriver does the trick... 🙂

  8. Thomas Says:

Unfortunately, also GPSModDriver was not of help... I have followed the description
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5730343#post5730343
but Navicomputer does still use the internal GPS - maybe I am doing something wrong?

OK, bad luck. The issue is with the phone, not with Navicomputer.
@Developer: keep up the great work! And one day, you might consider to add a manual port selection... 😉

    Thomas

  9. Jole Says:

Thanks a million Thomas, I could not get it to work on my i-mate. I have a couple of other GPS apps comfortably working with the 'Manage Automatically' settings.
For eg. GPSvp lets me chose any port, just select the port to switch between ext or int GPS. Global Navigator has option for automatic or manual port selection. Oziexplorer too is happy running on either.
I will try to find a solution that works for NaviComp but wont kill others! I will spend more time on it after a few days, I have an exam coming up.
NaviComp looks very promising. Lets look forward!
    Jole.

    Hi Jole,

You support would me much appreciated; from my point of view, Navicomputer has the best approach of all outdoor navigation programs, so making an external GPS work (which is a KO criteria for me for power saving reasons and because my external SIRFstar III device is far better than the internal GPS) would be fantastic. I do especially love the convenience in regard to adding maps - a really outstanding feature.
I will also ask on the xda-developers forum for some support in regard to GPSModDriver to make sure that I have proceeded correctly when using this tool.

    Let's keep in touch.

    Hi,

sorry, but I do not understand the description of how to use navicomputer with an external gps device. At the end it says: "Start your GPS app and configure it to use COM..." The description must refer to another program, because navicomputer can not be configured to choose the com port. So what now???????????????????????????

  17. Hans Says:

ARE WE ON A DEAD END
The Navi computer program always defaults to internal GPS antenna. How can I select the com port, to use this program, with an external BT antenna. Other GPS programs allows me to select the BT com port
Above comments and instructions do not cut it
my HTC P3650, is equiped with internal GPS antenna and WM 6.1
Sofar it is the best program, I have tried today. But wish it would work with an external BT antenna
    THANK YOU

  18. Developer Says:

    Hans,

under WM6.1 it should work as described in this post! This post was written by a NaviComputer user and it definately works for him and other users.
Have you followed the description step by step?

  19. Gabriel Says:

I had same problem with my HTC Kaiser running Windows 6.1.
The only thing that worked was to manually set the driver in registry to use the new bluetooth device comm port.
More details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=477124 (look down for Zigster post - thanks Zigster!)
You will also need a registry editor running on the phone (PHM Registry Editor - the cab is on google)

Is too bad that NaviComputer does not have a COMM port selector like other programs.
Maybe the developer can add it if we all promise to give a beer 🙂
I will be the first! Cheers

I had the same issue. My external GPS Hardware settings were not getting saved.

Then I made the registry settings as mentioned here

My settings were getting saved. I was able to use my Holux GPSlim 236b with NaviComputer on my Windows Mobile 6.

cheers and thanks every one for the help

  22. Hans Says:

The Navi computer program works great with the internal GPS antenna. Unfortunnaly, there is no way to select the external BT antenne com port.
With the GPS intermediate driver, I have some control as to what port the GPS signal is presented. I have tried every program port without succes.
It seems navicomputer bypasses the GPS intermidiate driver, and looks directly to the intenal Gps antenna
I have followed all the treads including the registry hacks and I cannot force navicomputer to look at the GPS intermediate driver.
With the hack, it does switch on the internal gps antenna but the button remains on red.
I have an HTC Touch cruise P3650 (polaris) with WM 6.1
    Any help is appreciated

  23. Hans Says:

Is there any way in the regedit to make navicomputer connect to the BT port

  24. Hans Says:

Navicomputer and GpsModDriver working with a Bluetooth Antenna with a faster Satelite fix

Navi computer is one of the best GPS software programs developed for Windows mobile 6.X.
It has in my opinion one weaknes. It has no menu control for com port selection.
    For example
You would like to connect a Bluetooth Antenna, because the internal antenna of the Smartphone is not close enough to a window to capture satellite GPS information.
Or you want a Bluetooth Antenna, to avoid internal antenna Battery drain.
In both cases you would like the ability to switch Navicomputer from the internal antenna com port to the external Bluetooth Antenna com port.
In my HTC P3650 ( Polaris , touch cruise) with a Qualcomm 7200 CPU Smartphone, it seems whatever you do with the com settings in (start/settings/system/external Gps/Programs) tab, the Navicomputer always defaults to the internal antenna.
This can be observed by the amber flashing emitting diode located near the phone’s earpiece
In addition ( start/settings/system/external Gps/Hardware) tab always defaults to the (none) Gps hardware port.
Other GPS software programs such as Tom-tom you have the flexibility to select the GPS antenna comport.
in my case the internal antenna seem to be on com4 and the (start/settings/connections/Bluetooth/COM Ports) tab, for the External BT antenna, is selectable and I did set it to com6.

For Navicomputer I found a solution by installing the Mach2003 GpsModDriver http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=389846&d=1282972893
I am a layman when it comes to explaining all the functions and controls in each adjustable menu in this software. It can be better explained by Mach 3000. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=571266&highlight=bluetooth

But essentially this program seems to be a conduit for Gps satellite information from either the internal antenna or the external BT antenna com port (Someone may want to correct me), to multiple GPS software programs in the Smartphone , These Gps programs can be run simultaneously.

It took me some time to adjust the program through trial and error, but now I feel I can report the settings so that an external BT Antenna can be used with the Navicomputer software package.
After the GPS mod driver install, a GPSMODsetup icon shows up in the Programs menu.
When you open the program, you see a panel which shows the first line were the information is collected from Cell Tower,or MsAPI, or com4 . The second line shows Profile: Walking or Driving ect. When tapping on this panel, the satellite position and signal strength may show up. In my case it did not because no com port was selected.
I made the following changes to the installation default settings in menu/Ports for all GPS programs to work with the internal Antenna
    1) MsAPI, I unchecked both Enable and fix, and set the order to 2
    2) Com4 I checked both, enable and fix and set the order to 3.
    3) No other check marks in enable but Com4
    4) save
Now you should see the Amber light flashing every 8 to 10 seconds

To swith to the Blue tooth Antenna port, I looked in (start/settings/connections/Bluetooth/COM Ports) tab, which was in my case Com6 and I activated Bluetooth in Comm Manager. Both Amber and blue led should be flashing

In above bullet #2, I changed the check from com4 to com6 without the fix check, and I did set the order to 3. After save, you only should see the Blue led flashing every 8 to 10 seconds and now all GPS programs should get their satellite fix from the Bluetooth Antenna.
If a GPS program, other than Navicomputer, has a menu to select the comport, choose the comport shown in (start/settings/system/external Gps/Programs) tab. In my case it was com4
The GPSMOD program will continue to run after exiting
I Have no idea what the additional battery drain is.

Another great benefit, when using this GPSMOD driver conduit.
The initial satellite fix is extracted from the cell towers and therefore you will find that a GPS satellite fix in any GPS program is much faster.

  26. Louis Says:

I have a similar problem with a HTC Herald (P4350), WM 6.0, and an external GPS receiver (Royaltek). The mobile phone has no internal antenna. With the simple configuration given by HTC, the GPS is working well with Google Maps.
But with NaviComputer, the GPS receiver is not recognized. At the beginning, I saw 'Scan' (with a yellow background color) on the top-right of the screen. Now, I see always 'Off' with a red background.
    I tried COM0 or COM1 : same problem.

So, if that works with Google Maps, that means that the configuration and the registry are right. The above posts concern mainly the problem with an internal antenna. So, how to do ?

That's too bad because NaviComputer seems the best software with the offline mode.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  27. Louis Says:

Now, I get 'Scan 0(11)' or 'Scan 0(12)' or 'Scan 0(10)'. After 10 minutes, I don't get 'Fixed', still Scan. With Google Maps, I get the position immediately.
With NaviComputer, I also get an altitude (325 m) which is approximatively 75 m higher than the real one.
So, that seems partly working... Is there some parameter to set ?

  28. Louis Says:

    Sorry for the multiple posts...

In fact, the current version of Google Maps Mobile doesn't manage external GPS receivers. So, the position was found with the Wifi Internet connection.

Anyway, I tried to know if the GPS is working by means of the software GPSScanner. So, it works normally : I get my position and the port settings (COM6 and 9600 bauds).

So, the problem seems own to NaviComputer. And, as I get 'Scan' with 10 to 12 satellites, it seems that the problem is not strong... So, how to solve it ?

  29. Louis Says:

Maybe my posts will be interesting for some people...

Finally, I get 'Fixed' after a little trip by car ! When I come back to home, I get sometimes 'Scan' and more often I get 'Fixed'. Before my trip I got always 'Scan' !

So, there was nothing to do in the registry or elsewhere.
    Quite strange isn't it ?

  30. Louis Says:

What do you mean exactly about the truth ... ?

Your post dated "Louis Says: November 15th, 2011 at 12:10 pm " to the so called guy "Jordan Lein" is a predator advertiser you tell this since they use a hyper link to their name in blue so you click the link so you get to read what they are promoting. Same old email spam... better if the developer of the site could suppress posters from having hyper links about themselves then it would put pay to this. i.e. it isn't a post about you but someone promoting their products.
